Soldier On’s Gordon H. Mansfield Veterans Community in Pittsfield, Massachusetts was one of only 14 projects nationally awarded for outstanding work in affordable housing.  The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced the winners of its prestigous “Door Knocker” award in Washington last week.  Caswell Strategies was a lead consultant to the project.

 HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan said, “Whether it’s saving a homeless veteran from a life on the streets or designing a transit-oriented, energy efficient development that revitalizes a blighted neighborhood, these governments prove that working together, we can make a real difference.”

 Soldier On CEO John F. Downing and Massachusetts Undersecretary for Housing and Community Development Tina Brooks accepted the award from HUD Assistant Secretary Mercedes Marquez at a conference honoring the 20^th anniversary of HUD’s HOME program.  The HOME program is the largest federal block grant program dedicated to producing affordable housing at the state and local level.  Since 1992, HOME has produced more than one million units of affordable housing throughout the U.S.  The Mansfield Community project included $700,000 in funding from HOME.

 “I am honored by this award and what it represents for our veterans and for our program,” said Downing.  The Mansfield Community in Pittsfield provides 39 veterans the opportunity to own and manage where they live while continuing to receive Soldier On’s platform of supportive services.

 “This national model allows veterans to feel the full responsibility that ownership entails  while having the availability of the Soldier On service platform and it has proven a tremendous success,” said Downing.  Soldier On’s award from HUD comes on the heels of another recent award from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to build housing in Northampton and from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to build housing in Agawam.

Caswell Strategies makes residential solar installations easy, effective, and affordable for homeowners. We work with partners to ensure effective approaches to design and installation, and we can assist in obtaining available funding from incentives. 

Benefits: Financial and Environmental

Currently there are great incentives available which help fund residential solar systems, including a Federal Tax Credit that refunds 30% of the total installed cost. With all incentives and energy savings taken into account, a residential PV system will pay for itself surprisingly quickly. Once the upfront cost is recovered, the energy savings continue throughout the life of the system. As energy costs increase in the future, energy savings improve.

Solar energy is clean, renewable energy. Nonrenewable fuels used to produce electricity at power plants emit carbon dioxide and other harmful pollutants, and solar energy helps limit use of these nonrenewable sources. In a single year, a 5kW residential photovoltaic (PV) system will offset nearly 8,000 lbs of carbon dioxide while significantly reducing nonrenewable energy consumption. With substantial financial and environmental benefits of residential solar systems, homeowners not only save on energy costs, but also help to preserve the quality of the environment.

Types of Systems, and Assessing Your Home for Solar

Two options for residential solar applications are Photovoltaic (PV) and Solar Thermal systems. A PV system can offset a significant amount of electricity that would otherwise be purchased from the utility, while a solar thermal system converts the sun’s energy into heat which is used to create hot water for household use.

One of our clients, Soldier On in Northampton, MA is a national leader on ending homelessness among our nation’s veterans.  As evidence of their national significance, at the Annual Award Gala in late October, they honored the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Admiral Mike Mullen (above).   Also attending was Bob Woodruff, ABCNews, Massachusetts Lieutenant Governor Tim Murray, Stephen Coyle, CEO of the AFL-CIO Housing Investment Trust, and many other national and state leaders. 

We work with Soldier On to acquire and finance units, as well as developing new and innovative housing strategies to provide more homes for veterans to call home.  The revolutionary use of cooperatives to build equity and the development of new programs to help women veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan are just two such examples.  Try to imagine being an enlisted woman, returning from a combat zone — perhaps with mental and physical issues (like PTSD) – and being mom again.  Tough stuff.
